Augmented reality - if you haven't heard about it yet - you will. Using everyday webcam technology, augmented reality enables websites, mobile phones & portable devices to deliver seriously cool and innovative interfaces, games and real world interactivity. E-creation is developing marketing using augmented reality and augmented reality interfaces like:
The example below shows the 'user interface' that is typically used to manipulate information and navigate content. The visitor to the site must print out the 'glyph', which is then used to interact with the site. For marketing purposes, it is possible to produce pre-printed 'glyph' with corporate branding, which are then used to interact with the content on the website.
The visitor must then have a webcam connected to their computer or as part of their laptop (as is the case with most laptaops these days). When the Flash player starts up, the user must confirm that Flash can use the local webcam because from that point on, the webcam and the paper 'key' become the interactive navigation device, enabling the client to interact with the screen and content WITH live video.
I am SO stoked by augmently reality interface design for marketing because it is the future. My first reaction was to think about all the cool games we can build and get people to interact with. But now, with a bit more thinking, the potential for creating marketing campaigns the use augmented reality at the heart makes incredible sense. Upon receiving an augmented reality glyph, the clients interest is immediately aroused. What is this thing? What does it do? So we have immediately started to win the battle by getting them interested - but then, for them to go to a website and actually see what it does - well, its just blown everyone away that we've demonstrated the technology to.
